I'm trying to make a flowing river.

Water flows in Infdev right now, but a bucket of water will only go about 7 to 8 blocks before it stops. So after it stopped spreading out I though about putting more water to where it ended. This did not turn out well.
I ended up having the water spreading out in two different directions and causing two opposing flows thus canceling them out and making my river useless.... Is there a way to make a long, strong flowing, river go in one direction?

Only if you start out at a really high altitude and then keep lowering the water layer every 7-8 blocks.

What a shame, I have to keep going down and down. It's getting annoying. Hopefully we can get notch to fix this or make man made rivers possible.

You can make rivers, it's just that the current won't flow.

Water has to go downward at a minimum rate to continue flowing. If he changed it it would be unrealistic.

You're right, but equally, the water in game doesn't obey this rule because the water should attempt to fill it's container in the largest surface area possible and at the moment it seems to act like there is some invisible force pushing against the water as it flows to the bottom causing it to slope.

Notch said it is best to go down every four blocks.

It took me a while, but I was able to make a creek to go down into two ponds (one of which was hand made by me).
It looks good enough for me.

I don't get why water doesn't spread out in all directions up to 8 tiles. Often times I'll place some, and it'll only go in one direction.
Water should also be able to overlap other water blocks, increasing the water level in said block- and if it's full, increasing the water level in the block on the other side of it, and so on.

Well, I had some channels to make, and I found this method worked well, though it only does one level at a time, you can make it as wide as you want, and there's a shortcut where you make it only one wide, then dig it wider and it works well as long as the ends are wider than the connecting channel... anyhow, this method works nicely for me. (Pics perhaps when my webhost stops being dumb..)
: dirt, : water, [iron] : air.
1: Dig channel
[iron] [iron] [iron] [iron] [iron] [iron] [iron] [iron]
[iron] [iron] [iron] [iron] [iron] [iron] [iron] [iron]
Or skip to 2: Make patern
[iron] [iron] [iron] [iron]
[iron] [iron] [iron] [iron]
3: Fill in holes with water (Use bucket)
4: Remove pattern, holes fill in with full water blocks

You could start at the bottom, and work your way up, that way your river is more uniform and doesn't make a weird vortex

you could give the river extra height to start, then you won't need 7 per the whole way.

I really hope water gets fixed. it is rather stupid to dig a 50 tile long trench to the ocean and only have the water flow 4 blocks in before stopping. water should fill up an area if it is next to a large volume or source

it was already mentioned in this thread that this is an anti griefing counter-measure. what's more stupid is if you were building something online and someone flooded your entire cave/city and there was no way you could ever remove the source because now the entire map is a 'source' block
the method posted above works very well for creating a river of source blocks, so you could have a still creek, and could even put in small rapids to connect multiple creeks together if you wanted it to look more 'natural' than just a straight 50 block line of still water
I know this game is not a simulation but I feel the need to add this in anyway, in RL if you dig a perfectly straight trench from the ocean you do not get a full trench of water all the way back home LOL. so the way the game currently works is much more 'realistic' and definately not 'stupid'
if you're more interested in making a flowing river (as the op was looking for) I think i've found a way, but it's more for quick transport across a map (without the need to invest any iron in minecart tracks)
the few downsidse being you cant transport goods along it (as you can with minecarts), unless you bring them yourself. and you need to make 2 seperate river 'highways' if you want to be able to go both ways :smile.gif:
once i do a bit more testing i'm gonna post some videos/tutorials to see what others can do with the technique

make a 2 wide 1 deep ditch, make it as long as you need. Put two source water blocks in the corners on one end. Where the water stops flowing, place signs or ladders on the walls above the first patch of dry land. Place two more water blocks after the new signs and dig out the two blocks under the old flow, the two dry blocks and the two blocks under the new flow. repeat & voila! A river that flows forever (well, almost) and doesn't need to descend.

Woah, epic necro.
I'm just going to throw this out there and say to anyone who makes suggestions about tweaking the water, it's incredibly difficult to program. Heck, truely realistic water would probably cause minecraft to lag in huge amounts.
